AJM Packaging Corporation is seeking to add an experienced Packaging Engineer to its team. This position is responsible for leading AJM’s packaging initiatives supporting Procurement, Operations, Marketing, Planning & Design and Manufacturing.  The position reports to the head of engineering and works independently to design, develop and test packages and packaging materials for multiple products and customers.  This position will also support production/manufacturing/quality in the resolution of packaging issues including implementation of new products in to production.  Additionally, this position reviews, investigates and resolves current packaging materials for cost reduction and performance efficiencies.  This role will collaborate cross-functionally to establish, synchronize and meet AJM’s high quality packaging goals, opportunities and delivery requirements.

  • Support production/manufacturing in the resolution of packaging issues and implementation of new products into production; investigate and propose cost reduction initiatives
  • Manages multiple development projects and prioritizes tasks based on timelines.
  • Delivers effectively in a cross-functional team environment by working with Brand, Planning, Formulation, Procurement, Quality, and many external suppliers and customers
  • Interface with Supply Chain for manufacturing scale-up including line trials, production start-ups, cost savings, and improving line efficiency.
  • Lead development (paper, board, pads, corrugated) and generate specifications of packaging components with Marketing, Design, Operations, Manufacturing, Quality and Suppliers
  • Develop, design, specify and test all secondary, bulk, and pallet/display packaging for distribution/handling for all AJM customers; stability/compatibility tests to meet agreed upon standards to ensure maximum product quality at minimum costs while meeting internal stakeholder criteria (Sales, Marketing, Distribution, Warehousing, Quality)
  • Conduct Packaging Line Trial tests for all new packaging components and new product development
  • Analyze various secondary packaging designs and associated vendor(s) in order to eliminate inefficiencies, reduce manufacturing costs for each launch program
  • Specifies and designs product packaging to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions – understands correlation between material performance specifications and final package performance
  • Tests, analyzes, and selects materials for packaging based on durability and cost effectiveness.


  • B.S. Degree (Packaging Science, or engineering equivalent) and 7+ years’ experience in the packaging field, preferably in the consumer goods industry (paper converting experience is a huge plus)
  • Must demonstrate understanding of package development process and engineering principles and must possess corrugated packaging experience
  • Possesses the ability to design and develop primary and secondary packaging components that meet consumer, brand, customer, and manufacturing objectives
  • Must be able to demonstrate a general understanding of project management to realize the order, importance, and impact of appropriate project activities and maintain packaging commitments to project scheduling.
  • Must understand consumer, business, and category needs and the relationship to packaging decisions & execution. An entrepreneurial mindset is beneficial
  • Experienced in problem-solving, leading, and managing projects and project teams
  • Ability to influence and drive alignment among team functions
  • Effective communication skills to convey complex and/or detailed information to a wide range of individuals/audiences with different knowledge levels
  • Thorough knowledge of packaging, product, and bills of materials to successfully produce packaging specifications for quoting
  • Fundamental knowledge of printing processes and color management
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Understands situations requiring escalation or need to seek out assistance
  • Knowledge of food packaging material science
